What is the Music Memory Café?

The Music Memory Café is a program hosted by the Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Center and Directed by The Washington Jazz Arts Institute Artistic Director, Davey Yarborough. It is funded by the Commission of Arts and Humanities. This special program will be comprised of retired musicians throughout the District of Columbia with early to moderate stages of memory loss who will gather to create a DC Jazz Band.

Do I need to be able to play an instrument to be in the band?

Yes. We are currently looking for retired jazz musicians. However, we will also consider jazz vocalists

How do I sign up and schedule an audition?

Please go to our website at www.gnjseniordaycare.com and complete the online registration and media authorization form.

What is the criteria to be considered for an audition?

You must be a DC resident, over the age of 60 years old with early to moderate memory loss.

Are there any other requirements to participate?

Yes. You must be able to take care of your personal needs independently, have transportation, and make basic decisions for yourself..

Can I audition virtually?

No. All auditions must be held in person.

Where will the auditions be held?

Auditions will be held at the Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Daycare Center. Location details and scheduling can be found on the website at www.gnjSeniorDaycare.com.

Will you provide the instruments?

We will work with you to assist in getting an instrument if you are selected to participate in the band. However, you must have an instrument to audition.

Will you provide transportation?

At this time, we are not providing transportation. However, you can schedule it through Med Express or Metro Access if needed.

When will the auditions start?

Auditions will start in April and run through the month of May.

What happens after the auditions are completed?

Our Musical Director, Davey Yarborough, will organize and direct a jazz band of the selected musicians who will practice and prepare music into a collaborative creative performance.

How often will the band rehearse throughout the month?

The band will rehearse at least once per week during the months of June and July to practice for an invited audience at the Music Memory Café scheduled in August.

Will I get paid for participating in the band?

No. This is strictly a volunteer service project.

How long will the project last?

The project ends September 30th, 2023.

If I am not selected to participate in the band, may I still sign up to participate in the Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Program?

Yes. The Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Program is open to all DC residents over the age of 60 who are in need of recreation and socialization activities. Please visit our website to learn more about our program at www.gnjseniordaycare.com.
